New Year, New Habits: How to stick to your resolutions without losing Your Mind

New Year, New Habits: how to stick to your resolutions without losing your mind!

By Judith Hirst, Head of Leadership Development, Greenbank

Ah, the New Year. The time when everyone decides they’re going to overhaul their lives, become vegan, run a marathon, and master the art of French pastry—all before February. While the enthusiasm is admirable, let’s be real: building new habits is hard. But fear not, here’s how you can actually stick to your New Year’s resolutions without losing your mind or your sense of humour.

1. Start Small – Dream Big

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are new habits. If your resolution is to read more books, don’t aim to finish “War & Peace” in a week. Start with something manageable, like a chapter a day. Small victories keep the motivation alive and prevent burnout.

2. Make It Fun

If your new habit feels like a chore, it’s destined to fail. Find ways to make it enjoyable. Need to exercise more? Mix it up with dance classes or a virtual team workout challenge. Want to eat healthier? Turn it into a gourmet cooking adventure. The more fun it is, the more likely you’ll stick to it.

3. Accountability Partners: The More, The Merrier

There’s nothing like a bit of peer pressure to keep you on track. Share your goals with colleagues or form a resolution buddy system. When you know someone else is watching, you’re less likely to slack off. Plus, it’s an excellent way to build camaraderie and maybe even have a few laughs along the way.

4. Track Your Progress (And Celebrate It)

Keeping track of your progress helps you stay motivated. Use apps, journals, or even a whiteboard to mark milestones. And don’t forget to celebrate your successes—big or small. Reward yourself with something fun, like a coffee from that overpriced cafe you love or a new gadget for your home office.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Slip-ups happen. Life happens. If you miss a day or fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up. Acknowledge it, learn from it, and move on. Remember, building new habits is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s the consistent effort over time that matters, not perfection.

6. Revisit and Adjust

Sometimes, our initial resolutions need a bit of tweaking. Maybe you realise that waking up at 5 AM to meditate is just not your thing. That’s okay. Adjust your goals to fit your lifestyle and keep them realistic. Flexibility is key to sustainability.

7. Harness the Power of Neuroscience

Your brain is a habit-forming machine. Understanding the neuroscience behind habit formation can be a game-changer:

  • Cue, Routine, Reward: Habits form through a loop of cue, routine, and reward. Identify the cues that trigger your bad habits and replace them with positive routines, ensuring there’s a reward to reinforce the new behaviour.
  • Neuroplasticity: Your brain’s ability to adapt and change—neuroplasticity—means you can form new habits at any age. Consistent repetition strengthens neural pathways, making new habits easier over time.
  • Dopamine Boost: Small rewards trigger dopamine release, the feel-good neurotransmitter, reinforcing the habit. So, celebrate your small wins—they’re literally wiring your brain for success!

Final Thoughts: Have a Laugh!

If all else fails, keep your sense of humour. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Laugh at the mishaps, share your funny stories, and keep a light-hearted attitude. After all, who said building new habits couldn’t be fun?

So, here’s to a year of new habits, personal growth, and a lot of laughs along the way. Go forth and conquer those resolutions! 🎉

How’s that for a fresh start? Cheers to a successful 2025!
